ListenUpReviews.com’s Recommended “Required Reading” For Christians

Posted on June 28, 2010June 1, 2024 by admin

Recommended 'Required Reading'

Written by the members of ListenUpReviews.com.

After several years’ research and much thought, we’ve put together ListenUpReviews.com’s recommended list of “Required Reading” for Christians. (Of course, we’ll continue to research, so if and when we need to add something to the list, we will.) The following books— which are placed in the recommended reading order, and most of which are even legally available for free online, either in whole or in part— will encourage and enlighten, and we hope you’ll read, learn, enjoy, and apply!

FIRST AND FOREMOST…

The Bible

#1 – The Bible, of course! – (Available Everywhere)

There are numerous literal archaic and literal modern translations (the original/New King James as examples of the former; and the New International Version, New Living Translation, and etc. as just two of many examples of the latter), along with several colloquial paraphrases (The Message and etc.); and just about all of them come in both regular and topical study versions. A number of them are available online in their entirety via BibleGateway— go ahead and browse through and choose the translation and version with the wording and style that most appeals (or applies) to you.

[Note: Now, obviously, the Bible is the only thing on the list that is truly required; but the following items will help you immensely, which is why we recommend that they also be ‘required’. ]

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE ACCURACY OF THE BIBLE, SCIENCE, LOGIC, AND YOUR FAITH…

The Case For ChristThe Case For The Real Jesus

#2 & Supplement To #2 – The Case For Christ & The Case For The Real Jesus
by Lee Strobel
– (Available Everywhere; and The Case For The Real Jesus is also partially offered for free online)

(What is Content Advisory?)

Content Advisory

The Case For Christ: In chapter 11 (“The Medical Evidence”), the precise, in-depth medical description and study of the Lord’s crucifixion is, literally, horrific. It is an important issue to cover, obviously; however, the chapter is graphic to such an utter extreme that we were compelled to give you fair warning.

Law-trained investigative journalist Lee Strobel documents his journey from atheism to Christianity through his hard-hitting, logical examination of the facts. Both books contain his interviews with well-respected, leading experts in each subject and field, and Strobel does not hesitate to ask tough and pointed questions. The Case For Christ delves into the historicity of Jesus Christ; the accuracy and reliability of the Bible texts that describe Him and what He said; the actual import of the claims that Jesus made; the Resurrection; and more. In supplement, The Case For The Real Jesus explores recent, widespread stories and claims about even more Bible accuracy-and-reliability subjects, such as the “lost” or “alternative” gospels; supposed church tampering; supposed copying from other religions; the Old Testament Messianic prophecies; postmodernism, relativism, and ‘tolerance’ vs. real truth; the implications of beliefs; and more. These two books cross-examine the history, science, and logic of the basics of the Christian faith— providing powerful, true evidence and answers for believers, seekers, and even skeptics. The Case For Christ and The Case For The Real Jesus are definite must-reads.

Dismantling The Big Bang

#3 – Dismantling The Big Bang by Alex Williams & John Hartnett, P.h.D.
– (Available Everywhere; and also partially offered for free online)

Dismantling The Big Bang contains a wealth of fascinating information, written in a scientific, yet easily understandable (and enjoyable) way. The authors begin with a brief history of the development of modern astronomy, cosmology, and physics; explore science itself, and some modern scientific ideas and principles (both correct and incorrect) in wide use today; give amazingly concise (and layman-friendly!) descriptions of some aspects of basic and complex physics, including quantum mechanics, the four fundamental forces, dimensions, the laws of thermodynamics, black holes, how stars produce light and heat, and more; provide a description and a detailed critique of all aspects of Big Bang cosmology (as well as several other naturalistic cosmological models in an appendix); and then lay out the current Biblical models, including an explanation of how time works (and how we can see light from so far away). They also cover some of Earth’s own geological evidences; and, they even point out the principles of true Biblical interpretation, and the disastrous consequences of compromising God’s Word! Dismantling The Big Bang is an invaluable resource, and another absolute must-read.

Our rating for Dismantling The Big Bang: 5 & 1/2 Stars. 5 & 1/2 Stars

The Young Earth: Revised And Expanded

#4 – The Young Earth: Revised And Expanded by Dr. John Morris
– (Available Everywhere; and also partially offered for free online)

The Young Earth: Revised And Expanded traces the true history of our planet. It begins by illustrating what is really going on with education, then contrasts the proper Biblical model with secular and secular-hybrid models. Then it demonstrates the number (and the unprovability) of key assumptions inherent in radiometric dating methods; and shows how the sum of Earth’s physical evidence (from population numbers, to the Earth’s magnetic field, to just about every feature of the geologic record from fossils to coal to the rock itself)— even when using the long-age assumptions— actually points to an age that is far too young to accommodate evolution. Finally, it closes by pointing out why this subject is so important.

Our rating for The Young Earth: Revised And Expanded: 5 & 1/3 Stars. 5 & 1/3 Stars

Evolution Exposed (Biology): Expanded Edition

#5 – Evolution Exposed (Biology): Expanded Edition by Roger Patterson
– (Available through the Answers In Genesis Store: Direct link to book / Store home; and also offered entirely for free online)

For many years, evolution has been forcibly pushed through school curricula, science journals, museums, zoos, books, novels, magazines, movies, television, cartoons, radio, the internet, toys, and even on food products (!) as an unquestionable, proven fact. But its huge (and indeed mortally devastating) flaws, fallacies, and outright scientific refutations have either been totally ignored or glossed over. Now, in the reference-book-style Evolution Exposed (Biology): Expanded Edition, Roger Patterson finally reveals the truth. Each section of the book begins with a description (and then discussion) of the major evolution topic(s) that are taught; then lays out a chart cross-referencing the pages in the 4 most-used biology textbooks to refutations, truth-illuminating articles, and more in-depth books; followed by synopses or summaries of many of the articles and refutations (which you’re encouraged to read in full at the given web addresses).

Our rating for Evolution Exposed (Biology): Expanded Edition: 5 Stars. 5 Stars

Slaughter Of The Dissidents, Volume 1

#6 – Slaughter Of The Dissidents, Volume 1 by Dr. Jerry Bergman
– (Available through the Answers In Genesis Store: Direct link to book / Store home)

(What is Content Advisory?)

Content Advisory

There is one use of H*** and one use of D*** by students taking a survey.

Schools, universities, science establishments, and the media want you to believe that they are great centers of civil rights, ‘tolerance’, objectivity, and freedom; but nothing could be further from the truth. Through an astonishing number of documented cases and personal testimonies (which, in themselves, are only a tiny fraction of the real number), Slaughter Of The Dissidents, Volume 1 reveals the wholesale discrimination (and outright censorship and persecution) going on today against scientists, educators, students, and the general public (and which has been made even worse by the courts, who’ve held a shameful double standard in their rulings on these cases). For those who have followed such issues, that this awful injustice occurs is unfortunately not a surprise (though, of course, it may be to those who haven’t followed it ). What is downright chilling, however, is just how rampant and powerful a force it has become. After reading this vital work, you’ll agree that all of us must take a stand for our freedoms now, before it’s too late.

Our rating for Slaughter Of The Dissidents, Volume 1: 5 & 1/2 Stars. 5 & 1/2 Stars

The Ultimate Proof Of Creation

#7 – The Ultimate Proof Of Creation by Dr. Jason Lisle
– (Available Everywhere; and also partially offered for free online)

The title of this book may raise a few eyebrows. Can there really be an irrefutable argument for Biblical Creation (and Christianity/the Bible as a whole)? The answer is a definite “Yes!” The Ultimate Proof Of Creation‘s thought-provoking lessons on logic and rationality should be absorbed and applied by every Christian (and, indeed, the book also explains why we should!). Another invaluable resource.

Our rating for The Ultimate Proof Of Creation: 5 & 1/2 Stars. 5 & 1/2 Stars

Answers In Genesis

#8 – The information in Answers In Genesis‘ multi-format Get Answers FAQ’s; peer-reviewed technical Research Journal; and other resources

AnswersInGenesis.org features numerous resources (in all levels, from technical to layman) by accredited scientists and experts on topics from social issues to pop culture to theology to the latest research in all branches of science, and everything in between. The two sections we specifically listed above (“Get Answers” and the “Answers Research Journal”), combined with Answers In Genesis’ multimedia archive and daily news and feature articles, are always current and are yet another absolutely invaluable resource.

Our collective rating for Answers In Genesis’ resources: 5 & 1/2 Stars. 5 & 1/2 Stars

LIFE APPLICATION:
LIVING OUT YOUR FAITH…

Already Gone

#9 – Already Gone by Ken Ham, Britt Beemer, & Todd Hillard
– (Available Everywhere, also in Audiobook Format;
and also partially offered for free online)

An alarming 61 percent of people in their 20’s who used to go to church have left, or are set to leave, it. Already Gone lays out the in-depth facts of who exactly are leaving, when they are leaving (we’ll give you a hint— most aren’t leaving during college!), and vitally, why they are leaving. (Be prepared; some of the finds are downright shocking.) Then it clearly describes and explains what the true problems are, and gives the real solutions. Some of the truths in this book may be tough to swallow, and the authors openly warn you so; but the facts must be faced, and the solutions implemented, immediately.

Our rating for Already Gone: 5 & 1/2 Stars. 5 & 1/2 Stars

Just Walk Across The Room

#10 – Just Walk Across The Room by Bill Hybels
– (Available Everywhere; and also partially offered for free online)

(What is Content Advisory?)

Content Advisory

There is one use of H*** by someone Hybels had a conversation with; and after meeting two people at a restaurant, they revealed that they were living a particular immoral lifestyle.

Using stories from his and others’ own experiences, Bill Hybels explains in his direct yet very personable way what Christian ‘witnessing’ is, and is not , all about. There are so many observations and lessons on everything from how to tell your story, to prayer, to being the light in every area of your life yet following God’s plans and pacing— and it’s such a mind-, heart-, and soul-opener— that it truly is an absolute must-read.

Our rating for Just Walk Across The Room: 5 & 1/2 Stars. 5 & 1/2 Stars

WANT MORE…?

The resources in this section are optional, but still highly recommended, as they’re excellent supplements. [Note: We placed the list’s Honorable Mention here as well.]

The Puzzle Of Ancient Man

Honorable Mention – The Puzzle Of Ancient Man by Dr. Donald E. Chittick – (Available through the Answers In Genesis Store: Direct link to book / Store home)

The Puzzle Of Ancient Man is one of the most fascinating books we have ever read. It opens with an overview of the Biblical account of the Creation, Fall, Flood, and Redemption, along with some great, illuminating insights by Dr. Chittick; followed by some indications of cultural contact between different peoples long before it is assumed to have taken place (detailed maps, similar music, accurate facial carvings, and etc.), as well as a brief discussion of the Ice Age. Then it gets even better… because the next portion of the book delves into the mind-boggling, yet solid, worldwide evidence for past cultures’ advanced machines and technology— equaling, and in some cases surpassing, technology used today! The Puzzle Of Ancient Man really opens your mind to see just how much naturalism, and its resulting assumption of modern technological superiority, permeates our culture (despite being completely at odds with reality!); and it also opens your mind to the (downright awesome ) truth.

Our rating for The Puzzle Of Ancient Man: 5 & 1/2 Stars. 5 & 1/2 Stars

Frozen In Time

Frozen In Time by Michael Oard – (Available Everywhere; and also
offered entirely for free online)

Discusses the cause and the effects of the Ice Age, along with the creatures that lived at that time (particularly Woolly Mammoths). There is, in fact— as this book shows— an almost ridiculous combination of paradoxes and practical impossibilities plaguing standard ice age thought, which (if only allowed to) point the way to the real truth.

Global Warming And The Creator's Plan

Global Warming And The Creator’s Plan by Jay A. Auxt & Dr. William M. Curtis III
– (Available Everywhere; and also partially offered for free online)

This much-needed resource firmly cuts through the barrage of doomsday hysteria to expose the often-suppressed truth about “climate change” (and proposed “solutions”).

An essential supplement to this is the also-excellent article A Proposed Bible-Science Perspective on Global Warming by Rod J. Martin.

The New Answers Book 1The New Answers Book 2

The New Answers Book 1  & The New Answers Book 2 – (Available Everywhere; and both are also offered entirely for free online: Book 1, Book 2)

These two books cover a wide variety of questions, from Cain’s wife, dinosaurs, and the Christmas Star to Egyptian chronology, plate tectonics, and the laws of nature, plus much more.

Coming To Grips With Genesis

Coming To Grips With Genesis
– (Available Everywhere; and also partially offered for free online)

Written for all Christians, from pastors and scholars to students and laymen (well, minus one chapter ), it’s packed with excellent discussions focused on the authority of God’s Word.

This debate has two different parts. This first part is for critics, parents, and Christians. The second part (which we may or may not cover) would be for those who do not know, or would like to know more, about what Christian music is.

We welcome your feedback on this article; however, please read and digest the entire contents before responding. Thank you.

For critics, parents, and Christians

PREFACE

This article is not directed at those who write typical reviews, rating CD’s and so forth; that kind of honest, constructive analysis is great and keeps the quality standard high. Nor is it directed at those who are genuinely concerned about the personal lives, beliefs, and convictions of certain bandmembers; musicians are role models, and it’s good to do your homework on who you support. This article is primarily directed at those who have written, spoken, seen, or heard harsh public criticisms of openly Christian bands for their style of music, the way that they do their shows, the bandmembers’ appearances, and etc.

This criticism usually falls on those bands who play in a lot of secular venues, who use metaphor or subtlety to get their point across, and/or who are in an indie, Rap, Rock, or harder-than-Rock music genre.

Those who publicly criticize these Christian bands and question their faith usually have done one or a combination of the following: They do not like the band’s style of music, live shows, or looks in the first place; they do not read the lyrics (or they read them but take them literally, not looking deeper or allowing any room for art or metaphor); they pick on only a single song or video, to the exclusion of all else; and they generally just don’t do their research on the band, its members, or the element they’re picking on.

“And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it– lest you even be found to fight against God.” – Acts 5:38-39.

We’ll get to what makes a band Christian in a moment, but first let’s begin with a frank statement: Putting likes and dislikes of music styles aside, people who are in trouble— angry, hopeless, depressed, into cutting/self-injury, or worse (and there are unfortunately far too many; the statistics are literally shocking, and the signs of trouble are often disguised)— are not typically going to get hooked on traditional or AC worship music, especially right away. What they need is a Christian alternative in the same genre of music that they’re already listening to— that genre typically being Rock, Rap, indie, or harder— because it will meet them where they are and then guide them to hope.

In fact, we have personally read and heard some of the truly innumerable (and truly amazing) stories of people whose lives— not only their souls, but also their physical lives— were saved because they got into some Rock-or-harder Christian band’s music, eventually being led to God through it.

You personally do not have to like the band’s style of music, the way they write, how they do their live show, or how they look— if you don’t like it, you simply don’t need to watch or listen to them. Just remember that there are a lot of other people in the world with a lot of different tastes and needs; and the element that does not appeal to you will appeal to people who would not be reached any other way.

A QUICK NOTE FOR PARENTS:

By now you may be thinking, “Well, all of that’s fine for saving the lost, but I just don’t want my kid listening to Metal or Screamo (etc.), Christian or not.” That decision is up to you, of course; but please keep in mind that just about all teens and young adults will listen to music in some amount, at home or elsewhere. And no matter what you may dislike about some Christian music, it is infinitely, infinitely better for your kid than the secular alternative they will listen to if you ban the Christian stuff.

FORM VS. FUNCTION

Almost all of the harsh criticism we’ve seen stems from the confusion of what our pastor calls “Form and Function.” The function (the purpose) of certain activities never change. However, the form (how that activity is accomplished and in what appearance) can, will, and indeed must change to fulfill the needs of today’s generation and even just different people.

A good example of the form-function difference is church service and worship styles. Some of the main functions of a service are to gather with other Christians, worship God, and receive teaching from His Word. The forms are how that is accomplished: Some like reciting liturgies, some do not; some like one kind of music during worship, some like another; some like longer worship, some like a longer message; some like solemn services, some like lively ones; etc. etc. All of that is pure form: no matter what style, it accomplishes the function while meeting people where they are. In fact, when you look at it, not all— as there are certainly some occasional doctrinal differences— but most of the differences between church denominations are differences of form.

And this variety is actually a very good thing, because different people connect with different forms. Some people, in fact, will only exclusively connect with one certain form, while some others will only exclusively connect with another form. Think of it like language— just as the Bible is translated into different languages to reach certain groups of people who don’t speak (or read) any other language, so each different form will reach people who would never be reached by another. This is true for all forms, from the aforementioned differences in church to music outside of church.

Unfortunately, there is a tendancy in some quarters to latch completely onto the forms, in which case any other form (or even an insignificant or necessary change in that same form) is seen as being a deviance from or contradiction to the function, which of course it is not. And while that should not happen at all, the unfortunate phenomenon can occur nearly anywhere over nearly anything, including not only church but also the realm of music; and it would all be remedied by simply laying aside attachment to the temporal forms and instead focusing on the true eternal functions in God’s Word.

APPLICATION:
FORMS, FUNCTIONS, LOGIC, & THE BIBLE

By now you’re probably asking, “What makes a band Christian, then?”

Well, first of all, before we even get to the lyrics, we must emphasize that it is definitely not a band’s music style that makes that band Christian. Think about it: if there were ‘good’ and ‘evil’ types of music, who’s to say what instrument, sound, or type of music is ‘good’ or ‘evil’? Where in the Bible does it say, ‘this instrument or vocal is good, and this instrument or vocal is not’? For example, if Rock, which was created by humans, is ‘worldly’, then why isn’t traditional ‘worldly’, since it was also created by humans? Or even the “loud cymbals” in Psalm 150:5 and the music played on “all kinds of instruments” in 2 Samuel 6:5? It’s just plain common sense that apart from lyrics and intent, music alone, in and of itself, is not inherently ‘good’ or ‘evil’, no matter what it sounds like— music is music, a form and nothing more.

To explain this further, here’s a more detailed example. Take whatever music you are comfortable with— for the discussion, let’s say it’s traditional hymns. Select one, and take the organ or whatever instrument(s) it utilizes and replace it (or them) with an acoustic guitar (which would most likely be an acceptable switch, since the traditional 1800’s Christmas hymn “Silent Night” was actually written for an acoustic guitar!). The hymn that you chose to work with here has the exact same lyrics, and the same heart for worship; just a different instrument underneath. Now, since the acoustic guitar is strumming along with the hymn’s vocal accompaniment, why not add another acoustic guitar, a piano, and a bass to round out the sound? Why not keep time with some soft drumming? For that matter, why not use an electric guitar? Actually, why not bring the organ back in now, as well?

No instrument is holier, or less holy, than any other; they’re just tools. And any tool can be used for evil or for good. If a tool happens to be used for evil, do we blame the tool, or the person who was controlling it? The tool is inert, with no will of its own; of course the responsibility falls on the person who used it. And so it is with instruments. A flute is no more ‘Christian’ than a drum; an electric guitar is no less ‘Christian’ than an organ. And vocal styles are the same way. The tool doesn’t matter— what matters is the intent of the person using it.

Continuing with our discussion on what makes a band Christian, it’s also not the way that they do their show. Lots of lights, cranked-up amps, wildly flung water, and bandmembers crowd-surfing, swinging their instruments, and running/jumping/dancing around or even lying upon the stage, are all simply for show, for fun, or to release energy. None of this has anything to do with whether they’re Christian— at one time King David danced wildly before God, even when some observers thought it looked ridiculous (2 Samuel 6:14-23).

It’s not the bandmembers’ physical appearance, either. (“Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgement.” – John 7:24.) Long/colored/oddly-styled hair, odd clothing, tattoos, body piercing, and even on occasion (*gasp!*) eyeliner, are not indicators of their soul condition. All of that is completely exterior, and could only be a sin if it was expressly done against their own conscience. (“I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean.” – Romans 14:14. “… All things indeed are pure, but it is evil for the man who eats with a feeling of giving offense.” – Romans 14:20, latter half.) And remember, “…We do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” – 2 Corinthians 4:18. “…The Lord does not see as a man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7, latter half.

And finally, it’s not even necessarily their lyrics. Before you object, we are NOT saying that there shouldn’t be, or aren’t, any limits here— all Christian bands keep it clean, to an artistic extent, even when dealing with heavy subject matter; they support good morals and point out contrary ones; and they usually also put some specifically Christian content in there somewhere. However, they have every right to use an artistic, metaphorical, or subtle writing style if they wish to; and the lyrics certainly do not have to be (and are certainly not going to be) praise and worship all the time.

Yes, some bands are called to praise and worship; and some are indeed called to have an outspoken message. However, there are also some bands who are called to create music with a subtle message, guiding people to hope gently. And then there are some who are called to do all of the above. We need to respect our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ; understanding that not everyone has the same calling, and that calling is for God to decide.

What truly makes a band Christian? The hearts and lives of the bandmembers themselves. (Again, 1 Samuel 16:7, latter half; and much of the New Testament deals with this.) It’s their love for (and personal relationship with) the Lord. Their genuine care for other people. The conversations they have. The way they touch people’s lives… and indeed, bring them closer to God, in the way they were called to.

Some more passages you may want to refer to are:

“Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. For one believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand. One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks. For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living. But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written: ‘As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God’. So then each of us shall give account of himself to God. Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way.” – Romans 14:1-13.

“For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free— and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. For in fact the body is not one member but many. If the foot should say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body’, is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear should say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body’, is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. And if they were all one member, where would the body be? But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. And the eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you’; nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you’. No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it, that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.” – 1 Corinthians 12:12-25. – (Modern translation)

“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.” – 1 Corinthians 12:4-6. – (Modern translation)

And to those who would quote Romans 12:2 (“do not be conformed to this world…”) and other similar passages, we would ask you to check the context carefully, remember the separation of form and function, and then see:

“If you died with Christ from the basic principals of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations— ‘Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle’, which all concern things which perish with the using— according to the commandments and doctrines of men? These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.” – Colossians 2:20-23. – (Modern translation)

“I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with … immoral people. Yet I certainly did not mean with the … immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.” [physically] – 1 Corinthians 5:9-10.

“And so it was, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, ‘Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ But when Jesus heard that, He said to them, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice’. For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.'” – Matthew 9:10-13. – (Modern translation)

IN CLOSING…

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:13-16.

We Christians are supposed to be “salt and light” to the world. How can salt season what it does not touch? And how can you be a shining light in the darkness of the world if you don’t step out of the comfortable, already-well-lit areas into where the darkness is to light it up? (Remember Matthew 9:10-13.)

Really, there should be some Christian bands in every type of music genre— we’re trying to be light to the entire world, not just a certain part of it!

“For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more; and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law; to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.” – 1 Corinthians 9:19-22.

So should those bands who feel called to do so.

“Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them.” – Romans 12:6, former half.

“For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” – Romans 11:29.

The Great Debates – Debate #1: Copying And Downloading

Posted on June 28, 2010 by admin

Written by the members of ListenUpReviews.com

The great debate over downloadable and copied music has publicly raged for several years now, and many people are still unsure of the debate’s outcome. What is legal and what isn’t, and why?

Since we review a lot of music, we decided to provide an explanation and guide to help answer these questions. Even if you’ve never copied or downloaded music, received copied music, or given thought to these questions, you probably will encounter these situations and questions soon; so this guide is really for everyone.

Alright. Let’s start with online music downloading. There are both legal and illegal ways to obtain songs online. As for the latter, unfortunately there’s a whole slew of so-called “peer-to-peer”/file-sharing programs and sites that (although you may sometimes pay for the ‘service’ of using them) actually allow people to share files from their computer— usually music— with the world, which anyone can then copy off to their own computer at will. This, and any similar method of transfer (such as posting songs on message boards, etc.), is quite illegal.

Songs cost money to create and distribute— that’s why to get ahold of a CD or even a single song legally, you must usually pay money for each one (though not always; more on that in a moment). The thing is, any time you download music illegally, not only is it… well… illegal (and possibly very expensive in the long run, considering the number of serious lawsuits that the music associations are filing against illegal downloaders), it also— as we’ll explain in more detail later on— actually defeats the purpose of listening to that music, because it hurts the very band you’re enjoying.

Of course, the big question then becomes, “Is there a way to get legal music for free?” Surprisingly, the answer is yes. You will usually have to pay money to get legal music (either buying the whole album or separate tracks from legal sites such as iTunes, Walmart, Yahoo, Amazon, MySpace Music, and etc.); yet there are several ways to get free, legal music. If a band’s song is posted as a free download on the band’s own official site or e-card, the band’s label’s site, a magazine’s site, a radio station’s site, or on the band’s or label’s official page at MySpace or PureVolume, it’s legal. (Oh— and, best of all, many bands post entire albums on MySpace for your free listening pleasure!)

Now, let’s continue with the second half of the issue— copied music itself. “Ripped” or copied music is just that— it’s when someone gets a CD or a song and then copies it to give away to other people, or allows other people to borrow and copy it.

You need to understand that copying any music that is not legally free and giving it to someone else, or letting someone else borrow and copy that music, in any form is both legally and morally wrong and it also literally hurts the bands.

From the legal and moral standpoints, quite simply, it’s theft. As mentioned above, the reason why music usually costs money to get is that it costs money to make, just like anything you would buy at a store. If you tried to take an item that was not legally free from a store without paying for it, you would be stealing— and that’s exactly the same principal here. To put it another way, the people who work on the production of the music have jobs, just like everyone else. They get paid according to the sales of the finished product. Imagine you were working at a fast food restaurant, making food every day. At the end of the week you’re expecting to get paid for all the work you did; but then the management tells you that much of the food you made was not sold but taken, so you won’t be getting paid. That’s basically what happens to the people who work on music production when music is illegally copied.

Not only that, but putting aside the production workers’ income, from a purely logical point of view copying music is completely ironic. You see, contrary to what some may think, most bands do not make much money at all in the first place. Oh sure, a tiny, fractional percentage, a very choice few, make a lot; but, in general, almost all bands make peanuts. No matter how popular you might think they are, illegally obtaining or copying their music is only going to reduce their small income further. (Which they use, by the way, for such things as food, maintenance, and gasoline.) Beyond that, do you know how music labels judge their bands’ popularity? Mostly by legal track and album sales. Simply put, if a band sells enough music, the label will know that the band is worth keeping around and putting the money into to book live show venues and, most importantly, produce more music!

So even if you somehow completely put aside the legal and moral standpoints, the cold truth is, if you want to see the bands live or even hear more recorded music from them in the future, you must legally obtain the music so that the label sees the results. If you don’t get the music legally, or if you copy/let other people copy music, you’ll only end up hurting the very band you claim to enjoy.

We hope that this guide has answered the big questions and has helped you understand the reasoning behind the answers. We also hope that we’ve helped you find legal music, both pay and free. If you have other questions, need something cleared up or explained in more detail, or simply just want to comment, please feel free to Contact Us or leave a comment below. Thanks!

Portal

(What is Content Advisory?)

Content Advisory

There is one use of H***, meant literally.

Portal Portal Portal Portal

(Screencap Credits: Ember)

Portal opens with your character, Chell, waking from stasis to music and the voice of the artificially-intelligent computer that runs this facility, GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System). As it turns out, the facility was built to research and test experimental portal technology, and Chell is a test subject. As such, GLaDOS will lead your character through 19 test chambers, and reward you with cake upon your success.

…Or not.

As you you make your way through the series of progressively-more-challenging tests, it becomes clear that there is more going on than first appeared— and the final test will change your role completely. From that point on, the game is transformed into something far more creepy in atmosphere, and even more creatively fun for the player.

Portal Portal Portal Portal

(Screencap Credits: Ember)

When you combine that with the game’s slightly-surreal, sequel-set-up finale and the utter hilarity and brilliance of the credits , the only real reason we have to rate this game at 5 & 1/3 Stars rather than a full 5 & 1/2 is its length (or, rather, the lack of it)— it takes just a few hours to complete the main portion of the game (if you’re not specifically going after any ‘Achievements’ at the same time). Admittedly, however, that might actually be a good thing, as people who normally don’t play video games may enjoy it for that very reason; and people who do normally play video games will simply be eager for more (a desire that can be satisfied with the full-length sequel, Portal 2).

In all, this is an excellent game, and we highly recommend it.

Our rating for the Portal video game: 5 & 1/3 Stars. 5 & 1/3 Stars

Star Wars: Jedi Knight II - Jedi Outcast

(What is Content Advisory?)

Content Advisory

There are 1-3 instances of D*** (one is in a video cut scene, and the other two depend on how many enemy conversations you listen to).

[Note: There are some personally-tested Player Tips at the end of the review!]

Well, this is a very minor point, but just to get it out of the way we do have to mention that some of the graphics— while good— are not quite as photorealistic as everyone’s used to these days (especially in the video clip cut scenes… this game was originally released in early 2002, after all); but they can be tweaked to look much better through the game’s options menu.

That said, the game itself is so good that it has actually been officially recognized as one of the top 5 best Star Wars computer games ever.

(Screencap Credits: Ember)

When Star Wars: Jedi Knight II – Jedi Outcast opens, your character Kyle Katarn is not (or, rather, no longer) a Jedi; until the Jedi Trial before the third mission, you don’t have Force powers or a Lightsaber, and must rely on blasters (both your original ones and new ones that you’ll get from gun racks and defeated enemies), three different kinds of detonation devices, and special items that you pick up along the way (like light-enhancing goggles, healing bacta, and etc.). And even after the Jedi Trial, many of those weapons and items will still be necessary.

(Screencap Credits: Ember)

Outcast‘s plotline is great, and the missions are amazingly large, long, and complex— making for many hours of challenging and quite engaging gameplay. And along with plenty of action, all of the missions— and even the final battle— also make you think, using a very realistic amount of wits, strategy, tactics, and logic to get through, just as you would have to do in real life.

In all, this excellent title is indeed one of the best Star Wars games ever made, and we definitely recommend it!

Our rating for the Star Wars: Jedi Knight II – Jedi Outcast video game:
5 & 1/3 Stars. 5 & 1/3 Stars

Player Tips:

#1: Use the Fast Lightsaber fighting style from as soon as you unlock it until the last boss fight (where you might want to use the Strong style instead).

And #2: Whenever you fight a Sith, crouch! (Yes, seriously — it greatly reduces your target area, making yourself much easier to defend, and it also allows you to come up underneath your enemies’ defenses. Plus, it makes the boss fights a lot easier, too!)

Have fun!

Lord Of The Rings: The Board Game

Lord Of The Rings: The Board Game by Reiner Knizia and Fantasy Flight Games

(Review Credit: Ember)

[Note: There are some personally-tested Player Tips at the end of the review.]

Lord Of The Rings: The Board Game, designed by Reiner Knizia and distributed by Fantasy Flight Games, is an amazing cooperative strategy game that includes the great bonuses of beautiful artwork and a perfect adhesion to The Lord Of The Rings‘ storylines and themes.

What players must do is work together as a whole to get the Ring-bearer to Mount Doom and destroy the Ring there… before the darkness consumes them. And the genius of this is that if you want to win, there can be NO competition against each other— only against the game. Indeed, players will often need to willingly sacrifice their own characters or cards so that their fellow player(s) can get the Ring to its final destination.

The need for complete and intense cooperation, selflessness, and strategy between all players, planning ahead every step of the way— and all the while struggling and fighting against the fierce ‘will’ of the game itself— makes this the most unique, challenging, and definitely enjoyable board game that I have ever played. Whether you like LOTR or not, Lord Of The Rings: The Board Game is excellent, and highly recommended!

Our rating for Lord Of The Rings: The Board Game: 5 & 1/2 Stars. 5 & 1/2 Stars

Player Tips:

#1: Because of the nature of the game, it’s recommended that you play this with your closest friends— it helps.

#2: The best total number of people playing at a time is three; that way there aren’t too many ‘event’ tiles being turned over, yet there are enough players to make sure that the Ring gets destroyed at the end.

#3: If you’re playing this game for the first time, remove one ‘Ring-bearer moves one step towards the darkness’ tile and three or four of the regular sundial tiles. Once you can beat the game with Sauron on Step 15 and those tiles removed, add one tile back in, and try again. When you can beat that, add another, etc. And when you can beat the game with all of the tiles added back in and Sauron on Step 15, take those tiles back out, move Sauron to Step 12, and play again… etc.

Have fun!

The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian

The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian Collector's Edition

(What is Content Advisory?)

Content Advisory

During the raid on the castle, a stream of blood runs down Miraz’ neck as he pushes himself forward onto Caspian’s sword-point; and, during the summoning of the White Witch, the Hag very openly (and very visibly) cuts Caspian’s hand. (The rest of the violence in battles and etc. is either not quite shown, or is fairly realistic without being graphic.)

The second of the seven movie adaptations sees the Pevensie siblings (Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy) one year older than when they returned from Narnia at the end of The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe. However, Narnia aged an astonishing 1,300 years in that time, and was long ago invaded and conquered by Telmarines. Most of the Telmarines hated and feared the living forests and the creatures within, oppressing, attacking, and killing them until the trees slept and the few surviving creatures disappeared into the land’s deepest reaches. Eventually, they became only whispered legends and stories among the Telmarine people. Now, the only notable Telmarines who could be considered ‘friends’ of the supposedly-extinct Narnians are (the partially-believing) Prince Caspian the 10th and his secretly-half-dwarf tutor. Caspian’s evil uncle Miraz had murdered the Prince’s father, Caspian the 9th (covering up the death as a natural one), and only left Caspian 10 alive because he had no eligible heir of his own; but when Miraz’ son is born he has no more need of his nephew and the Prince must immediately escape. Fleeing into the forest, Caspian’s new life begins… and, one day soon, he is destined to help free the Narnians and then become their rightful King.

Differences from the book

General Changes: The most significant (and probably most irritating) general change is to Peter’s personality, which at times is now somewhat less than noble. Trumpkin’s personality, on the other hand, is changed for the better; he’s much more serious and wittily sarcastic (then of course gradually softening up to, and becoming rather fond and protective of, Lucy). Prince Caspian’s tutor is cleverly called “the Professor”. Caspian is older… and, due to this, there is some mutual attraction between Susan and Caspian. The forest gathering is more hostile to Caspian at first. The summoning of the White Witch is longer, creepier, and excellently intense. For pacing reasons, some scenes are shorter (for example, Miraz’ men follow Caspian immediately as he escapes; the Pevensies figure out that they’re in the ruins of Cair Paravel a whole lot quicker; only Edmund challenges Trumpkin; the scene with Lucy and the bear only goes as far as Trumpkin cutting into it; etc.). There are some minor changes of detail (Caspian is not totally knocked out by his run-in with the tree branch— Nikabrik finishes that; the treasure room door is hidden by vines and a sliding stone panel; the “door in the air” is made by a living tree; etc.). And several events are moved around in the timeline (Caspian blows Susan’s horn and Trumpkin is captured near the beginning of the movie rather than near the end battle; Miraz is crowned during the movie instead of years before; etc.).

Deletions: Caspian and his tutor do not stargaze before the escape. Caspian’s long introductory tour of the forest and visit to the Faun dance is instead completely replaced by a short new scene that introduces one character earlier and brings Caspian straight to the gathering. The most significant (and probably most-missed) deletion occurs because Lucy’s meeting with Aslan now takes place in two parts— the first part in a vision/dream, the second part during the end battle; because of the split, the sequence where she must go back, wake everyone, and either have them follow or go with Aslan by herself/the journey that they all consequently take with the gradual revealing of Aslan to each individual/the conversation after is gone (however, one or two small parts of it, such as Trumpkin finally believing, are mixed in with Aslan’s words to Caspian after the battle victory; and from Peter’s much more humble attitude at the end, you can assume that portions of the conversation took place offscreen). They are not shot at when they reach the work at Beruna; they just realize there’s no possible way through. The Bacchus/Silenus/etc. drinking party (which may have been better left out anyway! ) and the run through the town(s) freeing schoolchildren/Caspian’s old nurse/misc. others were also cut; because of this, Susan fights in the end battle. The triumph feast is not shown onscreen, though a celebration is implied. And there are some minor deletions of explanatory dialogue.

Additions: A boy from the school across the road from the Pevensies’ tries to talk with Susan before and after their adventures in Narnia. There is a fight between several boys (including Peter) in the train station. Caspian’s many losing raids on Miraz’ army are replaced by a long and intense castle-infiltration sequence. There’s one surprise little extra to Susan and Caspian’s farewell. And a few other small additions fill in backstory, character-build, and accommodate moved scenes.

This actually turned out to be one of the most unusual reviews we’ve undertaken, as the movie’s quality is so disparate between its elements (adaptation vs. presentation) that we were even forced to split its rating.

As an adaptation— well, let’s be honest; there’s a fair amount that pretty much fails. While a few of the numerous deletions, additions, and changes (such as removing Bacchus’ drinking party and making the White Witch summoning even more intense, etc.) were certainly for the better, and even the castle-raid sequence could have been forgiven (as it was added to replace the many losing raids of the book), the amount and weight of many of the other changes— from Caspian and Susan’s mutual crush (which was intended to make the story a bit more realistic, but could have been done a bit more subtly), to the somewhat drastic change of Peter’s personality, to excising Caspian’s tour of the forest and basically the entire end (Aslan freeing and healing the townspeople, which could still have been done even without the Bacchus stuff; the feasts; etc.), to (most significant of all) the deletion of nearly the entire night sequence with Lucy and Aslan (and a great deal of change to what was left)— rightfully annoyed and even offended a lot of fans.

…And yet, if you simply watch it as a movie alone, it’s excellent. Cinematically it has somehow improved, and features even better and more realistic special effects. (They also combined that with a grittier presentation, which we appreciated quite a bit.) And, of course, the acting is also even better overall. Then there’s the new and fully updated dialogue, which is genius (and quite often hilarious— the witty humor throughout the movie, both in actions and in dialogue, is wonderful ). Plus, the parts that aren’t humorous are much darker and often downright intense, adding further to the realism (and the appeal for teen and adult viewers).

In the end, the best way to put it is that Prince Caspian as a movie is great enough that we would certainly recommend seeing it, but without expectations of a close hold to the book.

Our ratings for The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian:

The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe

The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe

The first movie adaptation opens during the London bombings in World War II. Because of the city-bombing, parents are sending their children away to the relative safety of the country— and four siblings (Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie) are sent to the estate of Professor Digory Kirke. During a game of hide-and-seek there, Lucy finds an old wardrobe, and decides it’s the perfect hiding place; little does she know that it was made from the wood of a tree from a different world (known as Narnia), and that at certain times it acts as a doorway to that world.

For a hundred years, Narnia has been oppressed under the power of the false (and evil) “Queen” Jadis— more commonly known as the White Witch— who forcibly imposed a hard, endless Winter on the land. However, Lucy’s arrival is not an accident; and it will change the course of Narnian history, and the Pevensies’ lives, forever.

Differences from the book

General Changes: The hide-and-seek game is moved to coincide with Lucy’s first wardrobe entrance; for the second, Lucy and Edmund are up in the middle of the night; and the third (with the footsteps following them around) is initiated not by visitors taking a tour of the house, but rather an ‘accidental’ hit of a ball through a window. Tumnus is younger (or at least appears so). The creatures who were turned to stone for celebrating are now found as stone already, having instead been caught trying to help Mr. Tumnus; and the Fox— who temporarily avoided that fate— nearly loses his life helping the Beavers and Pevensies escape from the closely-following Wolves (though he is finally turned to stone later). Peter rides a Unicorn in training and in the end battle. There is no visible blood around Aslan’s knife-wound. Edmund recovers in well under a half-minute after receiving the cordial, so Lucy doesn’t have to be told to go help other wounded. At the end of the movie, the Professor enters the wardrobe room as the Pevensies tumble out of it, and (presumably) that is when they have their end talk (which isn’t shown onscreen, though the explanation that the wardrobe won’t work anymore is actually given in a cut scene clip just after the credits begin). Some scenes are shorter. There is some updated and expanded dialogue. And there are some minor changes of detail (hair colors, Tumnus’ tail length, etc.). [Note: The ‘change’ of the chief Wolf’s name to Maugrim (from Fenris Ulf) actually results from the name having been changed in the text of some editions of the book.]

Deletions: Edmund does not pull Jadis’ sleigh. The attack on the Witch’s camp to rescue Edmund is now a swift raid, so she does not have time to try to kill him or disguise herself and her dwarf servant as a rock and a tree stump.

Additions: An extended opening sequence shows why the children are being sent away. The Beavers have a network of hidden tunnels that run out from their dam underground. There’s a short scene with Tumnus and Edmund in the Witch’s prison (Tumnus is turned to stone just slightly later in this timeline). As Spring comes, the Wolves catch up to the Pevensies an extra time at the thawing great river, which dramatically deices as they all try to cross. Susan and Lucy send word to the others (by the trees) that Aslan was slain.

As a movie, The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe is very well done. The acting is great; the score is inspiring; and the visuals, of course, are stunning. The Narnian landscapes are beautiful and expansive, and all of the creatures are believable— from the most disgustingly exotic evil beast, to Tumnus the Faun, to the beautiful Griffin, to the noble (and downright amazing) Centaurs, to utterly magnificent Aslan himself.

Plus, as an adaptation, it’s (thankfully ) excellent: With perhaps the one exception of Peter riding a Unicorn— which was really the only thing out of character— the few inevitable adds and changes (listed above) ended up being fairly minor, with everything remaining absolutely true to the book’s heart.

To sum it up, The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe is an excellent movie for Narnia fans and newcomers alike, and we definitely recommend it.

Hoodwinked

Hoodwinked

We’ll cut right to the quick; Hoodwinked is a 3D-animated comical masterpiece that gives the classic ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ tale a whole new twist (or, more accurately, five whole new twists! ). This brilliant retelling gives you the ‘real’ story behind the fairy tale— and what a plot it is!

The movie begins with a short recap scene of the story we all know— albeit with a more skeptical and capable Red and a more sarcastic Wolf— including the wolf threatening Red, Granny tied up in the closet, and the Woodsman crashing in with an axe. But, as this movie will point out, appearances can be deceiving, things are definitely not what they seem, and there’s always more than one side to a story.

The police and a private eye arrive, all animals of course, and an official investigation begins. This is where the plot thickens… and becomes intensely funny. From here, the story splits four ways, one for each of the suspects’ testimonies; and once the truth is finally found out, there’s still the true villain to catch.

Now, to those who’ve noticed the clichés in this review so far, yes, we are doing that on purpose. You see, Hoodwinked itself is bursting at the seams with hilarious stereotypes and clichés— in fact, you can hardly go a minute without several (visually, verbally, or even musically). That, combined with the numerous movie, TV, pop culture, and even other fairy tale nods (like the Looney Tunes, old Mountain Dew commercials, Saturday Night Fever, Where Eagles Dare, The Thin Man Mysteries, The Wizard Of Oz, The Terminator, Star Wars, Spiderman, The Matrix, and much more), other humor, and the sheer brilliance of the plot, will have you alternately intrigued… and bursting out in wild laughter.

Hoodwinked is a very clever and funny movie (which, best of all, is completely clean as well!), and we highly recommend it.

Our rating for Hoodwinked: 5 & 1/2 Stars. 5 & 1/2 Stars

National Treasure Collector's Edition   National Treasure 2: Book Of Secrets Collector's Edition

Content Advisory

National Treasure: The lead character, having no ink handy, instead cuts his own thumb and uses his blood to reveal a clue near the beginning of the movie. There is also one use of D***, and one use of the curse-word-in-some-countries “bloody”. National Treasure 2: Book Of Secrets: Living together without being married is mentioned or referenced a number of times.

The plotlines of National Treasure and National Treasure 2: Book Of Secrets focus on treasure mysteries involving lead character Ben Gates and his family. The first movie finds Ben on a quest to validate the stories of a legendary treasure found and hidden by a secret society his ancestors (as well as many other prominent figures, including some in government) were a part of. These stories had been carefully passed down through the years, each successive generation searching for it, but none of them had ever even cracked the first clue. As a young boy, Ben formally takes on the responsibility of the search; and as an adult, he finally gets the means to do so… not for his own use, but instead to restore the honor of his now-infamous family, who have long lived in public ridicule for believing, promoting, and trying to prove what others see as a crazy conspiracy theory.

The second movie finds the Gates’ now-restored family honor in danger of being trampled again, this time by the claim that one of Ben’s ancestors was the architect of the assassination of President Lincoln— rather than a hero who stopped John Wilkes Booth’s conspirators from gaining another legendary treasure, which the Gates family has always known him to be.

Because of the nature of these treasures and the people who hid them, the hunt for their widely-scattered clues inevitably lead to restricted (often government) property— forcing the searchers to come up with quite ingenious, good-old-fashioned-bluff-mixed-with-modern-day-high-tech methods of obtaining information and getting past guards, high security, the (also-inevitable ) fully-armed bad guys, and of course the FBI. Gates even has to work around the Secret Service in the second movie (and you can bet we won’t give that scene away! ).

The movies also feature some very well-placed wit and plenty of danger-laced action. Plus, everything within both films’ storylines seamlessly blend real history with the ‘history’ invented by the moviemakers, to the point where you really don’t know what’s true and what’s not. It’s a very clever feature that draws you in— and actually makes you want to find out the real truth for yourself.

In short, all of these qualities make both National Treasure and National Treasure 2: Book Of Secrets great Action/Adventure movies, and they’re definitely recommended.

Our collective rating for National Treasure and National Treasure 2: Book Of Secrets
(for individual ratings see the sidebar above): 5 Stars. 5 Stars

Rockin’ Christmas Trivia:

Did you know that the classic Christmas hymn Silent Night was actually originally written for guitar?

While many often-humorous myths have been espoused over the years to romanticize why, it is a known, solid fact that it was only originally written for voice and guitar— not an organ. Silent Night's lyrics were penned by priest (and accomplished guitarist) Joseph Mohr in 1816; then in 1818 he gave them to Franz Xaver Gruber, who composed the music— directly for guitar.

Quick Info:

Genre – Science Fiction *

[slider title="* Note "]

Almost all Science Fiction (that has aliens in it, at least) assumes from the start the Big Bang, billions of years, and Darwinism; so during the course of the genre's stories those assumptions might occasionally be mentioned. While we review some sci-fi because the stories are quite good, we do not endorse the genre's underlying assumptions (for good reason).
