John Reuben – Professional Rapper

Posted on July 6, 2010 by admin

Professional Rapper

A Best Third Release Nominee in the 2005 Awards

Professional Rapper begins with the fan favorite “Move”. It’s a good track with mostly intro-type lyrics, yet like pretty much all of John’s stuff it contains nuggets of insight.

“Have No Opinion?” calls out hypocrites, false revolutionists, and people who are automatically argumentative, while explaining that he doesn’t want to dispute his personal opinions and beliefs with those people.

“I Haven’t Been Myself” (featuring Adrienne Camp) is musically dark/downbeat. Lyrically, he speaks words of regret for some things that have happened in his life, wanting to go back to how it was before.

“Life Is Short” is a cool, upbeat, catchy tune, lightly encouraging you to appreciate the time you have and to try and make it count.

“Treats” is another fan favorite. It begins with a hilarious clip of John supposedly talking randomly between songs onstage, and a frustrated girl in the ‘crowd’ loudly protests and even taunts him; she wants a real show, not just “that stupid arm thing”. From there on, the song is cute, fun, and very catchy. It also contains the ‘crowd’ occasionally shouting in unison (“Give us what we came here for! Encore, we want more…”, etc.). [And since this CD came out, we actually once heard a real crowd chant that, instead of the standard “one more song”, to get a John Reuben encore!]

“Freedom To Feel” (again featuring Adrienne Camp) is another dark track that gets fairly intense at the end. Lyrically, John observes (among other things) that if no one really shows their true self, how can anyone know what’s real?

“Time To Leave” first describes what he was told by society about what he should do and what relationships are like (which wasn’t right or true), and then his insightful observations about how it really is. He also reminds you: Never forget to truly live life. Lyrically, this is one of John’s best tracks.

“Re-Record” is an upbeat song, with John supposedly recording a message to everyone. He keeps on ‘re-recording’ it, but the whole thing (as usual) is good, and also (as usual) insightful.

“Jammin’ John And Mixin’ Manny” is a cute, short track that ‘describes’ himself and his DJ.

“All In All” (featuring Tom Skipper from House Of Heroes) is a more musically laid-back track.

“5 Years To Write” is a tribute from John to his wife. It goes through all of his conflicting thoughts, emotions, and the changes he went through as their relationship grew; yet, again, it’s insightful for the rest of us as well.

Finally, “Higher” (featuring Alan Auguste’) lyrically begins in the first verse as a simple closer track; but in the second verse John squeezes in some more insights.

Professional Rapper is simply another great album from John Reuben.

John Reuben – Hindsight

Hindsight

A Best Second Release Nominee in the 2005 Awards

Interestingly, as compared to Reuben’s other projects [both past and future], Hindsight has a nice laid-back feel throughout most of its entire length.

The album kicks off with “I’ll Try Harder”, a humorous diary entry that leads right into the next track (“I John Reu”).

“I John Reu” is a song that John has often played live; and while this version is obviously quite good, the live version is even better because of John’s humorous interaction with his bandmembers during it.

“Hindsight” is a great song about how to live life; as usual, John’s insight serves him well.

“Soundman” is a catchy and fairly humorous tune that, as you might expect from the title, is pretty much about live show soundmen. (…Or then again, maybe not. )

“Breathe”‘s excellent music and great lyrics make this song another one of John’s best.

From the chorus and some of the other lyrics of “I Pictured It”, you might think that it’s about a relationship of John’s, but it’s really another life-song.

“01/08/02” is another diary entry. This one is actually somewhat serious; but like the other diary entry, it leads right into the next track (“Doin'”).

“Doin'” is a great track— one of the all-time fan favorites, played at every show. The CD version (as opposed to the live show or music video versions) actually features a couple clips from some of the ‘dippity-doers’— one of whom is Cleaze (!), who seems to have chilled out somewhat since the previous album.

“Thank You” (featuring Manchild and Othello) is a quite catchy track. There’s a bit of humor at the end, too— John’s DJ puts the beginning of the song “Him Her He She” (from John’s previous album) onto the turntable, and you then hear John hysterically yelling “You see, I told you!! That’s a hit!!!”

“DJ Manuel (Turntablism 101)” is a short DJ-only track, providing a nice segue.

“Up And At Them” is another great upbeat song. In it John humorously uses a lot of large words that often start with the same letter.

“Defensive Offender” is the only rather dark track on the album— it addresses hate and harsh/manipulative words.

Finally, “Pataskala” is one more life-song that is slightly humorous but mostly just true. (John’s DJ finishes it with some humor, too.) This track caps off the album in style.

Hindsight is an excellent record, and we definitely recommend it.

Our rating for Hindsight: 5 & 1/2 Stars. 5 & 1/2 Stars

John Reuben – Are We There Yet?

Are We There Yet?

A Best First Release Nominee in the 2005 Awards

Are We There Yet? begins with “Divine Inspiration” (featuring Alan Auguste’), a good start to the CD as it explains what John is all about. The end of this track introduces “Cleaze”— John’s ‘nemesis’ in several of his songs and music videos — and it serves as a lead-in to the next track…

…The classic “Do Not”, one of the all-time fan favorites [and played at live shows to this day]. It’s easy to see why— the whole thing is quite catchy, and the lyrics are excellent.

“No Regrets” is a great song that describes John’s struggle to live with no regrets (and his eventual success).

“Him Her He She” is what John would call one of his ‘occasional dance tracks’— it’s a song that’s fun and fairly catchy.

“X-Ray” changes the mood completely— it’s a dark and very serious song about depression and denial. It’s sort of an eye-opener for people who may not realize they’re going through that.

The next track “Gather In”, however, brings the mood back up; it’s a catchy tune featuring the “Whoa, ba da-da-da” line that John sometimes used by itself to tease the crowd in his live shows.

“Rest Easy” is another good song. Lyrically a sequel to “No Regrets”, it’s also strong on its own.

“Hello Ego” is a truthful yet at the same time very humorous tune directed at those with overly large egos. John is actually talking to one of these people on the phone during the song, and it’s Cleaze! In fact, one of the funniest parts of the song is Cleaze trying to console himself after John gracefully hangs up.

“Jezebel” (featuring Cristina Elen) is a song that describes, and warns against, a dangerous relationship with someone who’s only playing for pleasure. It ends with John seeing through the façade and doing the right thing: saying goodbye and walking away.

“Draw Near” is another great song that is filled with firm hope.

“Identify” details some of John’s struggles during the verses and his victories and hope during the chorus and bridge.

“Place To Be” (featuring Speedy and Alan Auguste’) is a literally hilarious track in which Speedy, Alan, and John all attempt to freestyle in the studio.

Finally, the last track “God Is Love” (featuring tobyMac) closes the album off nicely.

In all, Are We There Yet? is a great debut.

Our rating for Are We There Yet?: 5 Stars. 5 Stars

John Reuben – Live Show “He made the Hip-Hop happy!”

BEST LIVE SHOW 2005 Award Winner,
and a Best Live Show Nominee in the 2006-2011 Awards!
John Reuben - Best Live Show Award Winner

Runners-Up: tobyMac, The Newsboys, Flatfoot 56 (Cornerstone Festival IL. set),
The O.C. Supertones.

First, let’s introduce you to his music. John Reuben’s projects are mostly Hip-Hop (Rap)/Experimental/Rock— meaning, he uses full rock instrumentation as well as DJ scratches and beats; has very understandable rapping (in fact he’s the slowest rapper we’ve heard!) along with occasional singing; and he also has an excellent sense of timing, very unique lyrics and wording, and a great personality.

That personality, by the way, is fairly humorous; so he does have a lot of lighthearted content on his albums. But he doesn’t shy away from the heavy stuff, either— John does literally bare his soul on many tracks. Most of his songs also include comments and insights on life and culture; some consume an entire song, others are contained in one line. Those insights hit you in amazing ways, making you see or understand things in a new or freshly different light. In fact, when commenting on such things, John often has stunning clarity, admirable honesty, and piercing wisdom.

All of these elements combine to create some impressive albums… yet onstage, he’s even better.

As we mentioned before, John Reuben has a fairly humorous personality; and, because of this, his interactions with live show crowds are usually downright hilarious. John likes to tease the crowd into participating, and the even more funny element is that not only does John like to tease his fans, his fans also like returning the favor! In fact, many people who have been to a few of his shows (and so know a fair amount of what he’s going to do) will tease him right back during the show— often prompting more funny dialogue from him. And his recent shows have even incorporated hilarious costumes, too!

John Reuben

In all, the aforementioned teasing, his humorous expressions, and constant interaction— taken with the songs as well— make a John Reuben show quite enjoyable, indeed.

High Flight Society – High Flight Society

High Flight Society

BEST FIRST RELEASE 2007 Award Winner!
High Flight Society's 'High Flight Society' - Best First Release Award Winner

Runners-Up: Group 1 Crew (Group 1 Crew), Deas Vail (All The Houses Look The Same),
Wavorly (Conquering The Fear Of Flight), The Send (Cosmos),
Half Past Forever (Take A Chance On Something Beautiful), The Almost (Southern Weather),
The Glorious Unseen (Tonight The Stars Speak), Lost Ocean (Lost Ocean).

Kicking off High Flight Society’s self-titled first release, “Time Is Running Out (Where To Start)” dives right into their energetic Melodic Rock/Rock music and Jason Wilkes’ excellent, smoothly powerful vocals.

“Up Above” continues these characteristics with lyrics that are positive and upbeat.

“Sweet Redeemer” is one of the best tracks on the album, with perfect, no-nonsense Rock music and escalating vocals.

“Learn To Let Go” is another great, energetic Rock track, and its guitars are fairly catchy.

“Declaration” is a little softer, but Wilkes’ voice effortlessly carries the song with the same smooth power.

“Loss For Words” brings the solid Rock right back with a lyrical message of hope and great vocal and musical melodies (and the chorus vocally escalates a bit at the end, too).

“Escaping” is a slower-paced Rock song with lyrics, vocals, and music that you can just soak in.

“Wake Up” picks up the pace again with a warning message.

Another best, “What’s Wrong” begins muted and softer, then turns the volume up with firm lyrics, excellent guitarwork, and great vocals.

“I Will Follow You” is probably the album’s best track— its excellent Rock and blend of vocal and musical melodies pull you in.

Finally, the closer track “Get By” musically starts slow and builds throughout, and has lyrics of hope.

BEST SECOND RELEASE 2009 Award Winner!
Flyleaf's 'Memento Mori' - Best Second Release Award Winner

Runners-Up: Owl City (Ocean Eyes), Benjiman (SKRIPT (Spreading Kingdom Realities In Perilous Times)).

(What is Content Advisory?)

Content Advisory

One song has a literal use of D***, and two others have literal uses of H***.

Flyleaf’s long-awaited second album (and we’re not kidding there— the wait was 4 years! ) is a concept album of sorts; and instead of lyrics, the liner notes contain ‘journal entries’ that form a complementary story (the final entry of which gave us goosebumps, as did no less than 5 of the album’s songs).

Memento Mori kicks right off with “Beautiful Bride”, a great Hard-Edged Rocker that showcases frontwoman Lacey Sturm’s excellent— and now both newly-expanded and richer— vocal range.

Following that is hit single “Again”, an excellent and very memorable heavy rock track.

Layered rocker “Chasm” contains some unusual vocal rhythms and melody combinations that are also memorable.

“Missing” is a regular-rock track that has an interesting use of synths underneath the guitars.

“This Close” features melody combinations that are occasionally somewhat unsettling, in keeping with the track’s lyrics and story.

“The Kind” contains some slightly intense visual metaphors (explained by the journal entry), and because of this it’s a fairly powerful track, too.

“In The Dark” begins muted and, well, dark ; then slides into great fast-paced rock (which itself turns into excellent full Hard Rock in the chorus).

“Set Apart This Dream” is a medium-paced, regular-rock track with sweepingly visual lyrics. Interestingly, the muted segue that follows after is basically a snippet of an extra song.

“Swept Away” again features occasionally unsettling music; and while its chorus is sung as usual, its verses are actually spoken. The end of the track purposefully collapses into a music-box segue.

“Tiny Heart” is another memorable song, this one with a piano/guitar combination in the verses and great regular rock in the chorus. It flows into the next track without a pause.

“Melting (Interlude)” is a slightly suspenseful instrumental/sound-effect track.

Excellent song “Treasure” musically builds to Rock in perfectly-placed steps; and, combined with the journal entry, its lyrics form a beautifully moving picture of true love.

“Circle” is a heavier track that— again, combined with the journal entry— is quite powerful.

And encouraging track “Arise”, with its powerful final minute, closes the album perfectly.

[Note: The album also contains a pregap hidden track called “Uncle Bobby”, which is a eulogy. As such, it’s somewhat emotional, and yet still hopeful.]

Expanded Edition:

The Expanded Edition contains 4 B-sides (“Break Your Knees”, “Enemy”, “Have We Lost”, and “Who Am I”), which range from great to a bit experimental.

Digital iTunes Version:

The Digital iTunes Version contains a cover of U2’s “Stay (Faraway, So Close)”.

And those who preordered the Expanded Edition through iTunes also exclusively received “Bittersweet”, which is a slightly suspenseful and great heavy rock B-side.

Digital Amazon Version:

The Digital Amazon Version does not contain either “Stay” or “Bittersweet”, but it does include “Tina” (from Flyleaf’s Limited Edition Much Like Falling EP).

Memento Mori is an excellent album, and worthy of Best Second Release.

Our rating for Memento Mori: 5 & 1/3 Stars. 5 & 1/3 Stars

FlyleafFlyleaf Special Edition

Hear Entire Album Online!Hear Entire Album Online!

A Best First Release Nominee in the 2006 Awards

Flyleaf begins with “I’m So Sick”. The vocals start off creepy, rip into several screamed words, and after that morph into normal singing. Lyrically, this track cries out against the sickness, darkness, and selfishness present on all levels in the world.

“Fully Alive” showcases the ring in Lacey Mosley’s great vocals.

“Perfect” describes how the drive for self-perfection can only lead to destruction, and it’s not necessary.

“Cassie” (featuring Ryan White) is both a tribute to the victims of Columbine and also a defiant anthem to hold fast to your faith even in the face of death. The musical elements underscore the lyrical message perfectly, with heavy guitars and urgent vocals. We still get goosebumps from this one.

“Sorrow”, a medium-paced, emotional rocker, encourages you to hold on because sorrow will not last forever, and there is still hope.

“I’m Sorry” is a rhythmic and nicely heavy track.

“All Around Me” is a great rock ballad; and its neat final bridge changes the rhythm, speeding it up shortly.

“Red Sam” (featuring Ryan White) begins with a troubled situation and a despairing thought, but then quickly responds to that thought and points out that there is, and always will be, hope left. The rest of the song expands on that, ending with a firmly spoken last chorus of “…you are the truth, saving my life”.

“There For You” begins softly; the guitars kick in for the chorus and last bridge, the verses in between them again soft. Lyrically this song describes the deep love Lacey has for her friends and the desire she has to be there for them.

“Breathe Today” is an urgent, rhythmic rocker.

And the final track is “So I Thought” (featuring Ryan White). Something about it draws you in, especially during the latter part when the guest joins the chorus. It’s an emotional song that illustrates either a breaking or broken relationship and the eventual healing of it, closing the disc off right.

Special Edition Bonus Content:

The Special Edition contains free goodies for your cell phone (including a ringtone); a poster on the other side of the liner notes; five new, freshly-recorded acoustic-version tracks on the CD; and a DVD.

The excellent acoustic versions of “Fully Alive”, “Red Sam”, “Cassie”, “I’m So Sick”, and “All Around Me” are all fairly full-sounding (they use at least two acoustic guitars on most of them, plus percussion, etc.), and Lacey’s new vocals adapt perfectly to the softer style, projecting emotion in a more vulnerable way. The band also incorporates new and/or changed melodies, and even some new lyrics, into the songs as well.

The DVD features music-video-like performances of all 5 acoustic-version tracks, as well as 3 of Flyleaf’s actual, original-version music videos.

Our rating for Flyleaf: 5 & 1/4 Stars. 5 & 1/4 Stars

Jungle Of The Midwest Sea

A Best Fourth Release Nominee in the 2007 Awards

With the release of their fourth album, Flatfoot 56 diversified their style just a bit; enough to add more variety in some places and some sound upgrades in others.

“The Galley Slave (Intro)” is a quite cool intro. Lyrically, it’s from the historical point of view of a slave who is chained to the oars of a large pirate or slave ship and forced to row for the rest of his life. Musically it has a great rhythm and sound effects.

“Carry ‘Em Out” is slightly different musically, more of a modern Punk Rock sound (but with a Flatfoot 56 twist, of course ).

“Loaded Gun” is a short track, and it features this album’s first bagpipe appearance. Lyrically, it has “they say”/”we say” contrasts.

“City On A Hill” is even more familiar, yet upgraded well. It points out that you can’t keep going back and forth between the sides of an issue— you’ll eventually have to choose.

“Bright City” is slightly slower (a medium pace), and focuses on hope through dark surroundings.

“Hoity Toity” is a much more bouncy, humorous-yet-serious song; it’s dancy (or should we say jiggy? ), fun, and has a great message. In other words, it’s classic Flatfoot 56.

“Pay Me A Dollar” is a story-song about two different people— the first one works hard unselfishly, the second does just the opposite. It’s another lyrical study in contrasts.

“Chinatown Jail Break” begins with a muted intro, after which the music kicks in at full volume and starts to build. This is another familiar-yet-upgraded track.

“Warriors” uses a lyrical metaphor of cleaning up a terrible mess to honor and encourage everyone who, at any level, is striving to do the same in real life.

“Cain”, as you might guess, lyrically goes through the story of Cain. Musically it features a cool, dark organ (courtesy of Josiah Holland) and a really great, also-dark bass/guitar line unlike anything they’ve ever done before. After this it moves into straight-up, old-school Heavy Punk for the majority of the song, and then back to the great dark music for the final bridge.

“Ollie Ollie” is lyrically a kind of anthem. This one shows off bandmember Josh Robieson’s bagpipe prowess (which is somehow even better on this album) in the bridge near the end.

“Standing For Nothing” includes the age-old warning “(If you) stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything”.

“Jungle Of The Midwest Sea” (featuring Emily Kilborn and Tony Duggins) is yet another track that is musically familiar, yet upgraded quite a bit. It’s also another story-song, this one about the at-that-time completely uninspected and unregulated workings of meat packing plants in the early 1900’s.

And the final track is “Same Ol’ Story”. It begins muted (as if it was an old tape being played), then goes up to full volume for the second verse onward. This track closes out the album with wonderful, heartfelt lyrics, some actual true singing (as opposed to their usual rough vocals), and rhythmic music.

In all, this is another great album from Flatfoot 56.

Our rating for Jungle Of The Midwest Sea: 5 & 1/4 Stars. 5 & 1/4 Stars

Flatfoot 56 – Knuckles Up

Knuckles UpKnuckles Up (Rerelease)

BEST THIRD RELEASE 2005 Award Winner!
Flatfoot 56's 'Knuckles Up' - Best Third Release Award Winner

Runners-Up: Disciple (This Might Sting A Little), Further Seems Forever (Hide Nothing),
Pillar (Where Do We Go From Here?), John Reuben (Professional Rapper).
Honorable Mentions: Relient K (Two Lefts Don’t Make a Right… But Three Do),
Thousand Foot Krutch (The Art Of Breaking).

Flatfoot 56’s third release is their true debut in a number of ways. [One being its rerelease in 2006, with new artwork and ‘even harder-hitting’ remastered sound, as their first album through Flicker Records which they signed to at the end of 2005.] In Knuckles Up, Flatfoot has completely perfected and solidified their sound. It’s an album that’s definitely worthy of Best Third Release.

Knuckles Up kicks off with “This Town”, a rally cry to clean up the world and bring morals and standards back into the culture.

Following that is “Brotherhood”, a fast-paced, awesome-sounding fan favorite that is one of Flatfoot 56’s all-time best.

“Knuckles Up” and “Breakin’ The Law” are also energetic rockers, each with their own unique lyrics.

“Hold Fast” is another great song and another fan favorite.

“Chi-Town Beat Down” is different in that most of it is actually sung by Flatfoot 56’s drummer, and he sings it fairly rapidly.

“Battle Of Bones” is a pirate story-song that, while having a sorry end for the pirate captain, still somehow makes you smile when you listen to it.

“Blood And Sweat” rebukes those who are or have been hypocrites.

“The Rotten Hand” (its title referring to a hand of cards) is a literally hilarious tune that is really beyond describing here. (If we did, we’d end up giving you a summary of the whole song. Instead, we’re going to leave our ‘description’ at that and let you hear the humor for yourself. )

“Fight To Live”, like its predecessor “America’s Holocaust” on Rumble Of 56, is a powerful song that pleads on behalf of the innocent children murdered by abortion every day.

Flatfoot 56 also includes their excellent version of “Amazing Grace” (featuring Dan Hansen). Beginning with bagpipes alone, adding in the rest of the band for the Punk Rocking main part of the song, and then fading out at the end to guest Dan Hansen’s great acoustic guitar playing, this is definitely one of our all-time favorite renditions of Amazing Grace.

And the final track, a short and pretty flute or whistle instrumental called “Arran Boat” (featuring guest Scarlett Herrin), finishes the album with a flourish.

Our rating for Knuckles Up: 5 & 1/2 Stars. 5 & 1/2 Stars

Rockin’ Christmas Trivia:

Did you know that the classic Christmas hymn Silent Night was actually originally written for guitar?

While many often-humorous myths have been espoused over the years to romanticize why, it is a known, solid fact that it was only originally written for voice and guitar— not an organ. Silent Night's lyrics were penned by priest (and accomplished guitarist) Joseph Mohr in 1816; then in 1818 he gave them to Franz Xaver Gruber, who composed the music— directly for guitar.

Quick Info:

Genre – Science Fiction *

[slider title="* Note "]

Almost all Science Fiction (that has aliens in it, at least) assumes from the start the Big Bang, billions of years, and Darwinism; so during the course of the genre's stories those assumptions might occasionally be mentioned. While we review some sci-fi because the stories are quite good, we do not endorse the genre's underlying assumptions (for good reason).
